REGISTRATION OPEN: Battleship New Jersey Tour

Posted on Nov 27 2022 - 9:47pm

Register Now for our December 12 trip - a day adventure to tour the Battleship New Jersey (a.k.a the "Big J" or "BB 62").  It's a 90-minute tour followed by a 30-minute "High Water" class about the ship's passage through a typhoon. In December 1944, New Jersey faced an opponent just as deadly as the Axis but far more difficult to fight, Typhoon Cobra, which sunk three ships in her task force and damaged many more. This program consists of a visit to the Bridge, 54 feet above the waterline, where waves broke overhead, the Expansion Joint, which allowed the ship to twist and flex, and the ship’s rescue boats used to rescue sailors washed overboard. Learn how to use damage control techniques to stop flooding, use a barometer to predict the weather, and experiment with buoyancy to see how much weight a ship can take before it starts to sink. This program culminates in an analysis of interviews with sailors who survived the typhoon, including future President Gerald Ford, and looks at how other ships experienced the same event.

Posted on Oct 20 2022 - 10:54pm

On November 1, 2021, BSA introduced the Citizenship in Society merit badge.  The new merit badge encourages Scouts to explore important topics around diversity, equity, inclusion and ethical leadership and learn why these qualities are important in society and in Scouting.  Beginning July 1, 2022, the Citizenship in Society merit badge will be required for any youth seeking to achieve the prestigious Eagle Scout rank.  This replaces one of the elective merit badges, Eagle Scout still requires 21 merit badges.
